The 8th Baltic Triennial of International Art, entitled CENTRE OF ATTRACT=
ION,=20
aims to research the ambiguous phenomenon of centres - their opportunitie=
s,=20
dangers and the various relationships between them be they political, eco=
nomic,=20
cultural, social, scientific, etc. The appeal of the centre - in some res=
pects=20
analogous to the centrifugal force of black holes - also produces an enor=
mous=20
gravity, an undertow with unknown consequences. The exhibition and accomp=
anying=20
lectures, seminars and panel discussions endeavour to initiate critical=20
discourse around the topic of centres, sites of space and of transformati=
on.
=20
Approximately 60 international artists will participate in the exhibition=
 and=20
other events, with a special focus on Lithuania and its neighbouring coun=
tries.=20
A majority of the artworks will be produced especially for the exhibition=
.=20
CENTRE OF ATTRACTION is oriented toward establishing a regular internatio=
nal art=20
event in Eastern Europe and creating a geographic balance in the map of=20
biennials and triennials, which act as temporarily centres of artistic an=
d=20
cultural dialogue.=20

Founded in 1979, The Baltic Triennial of Young Artists for many years pro=
vided=20
the only platform in the Baltic region for international artistic exchang=
e.=20
Touted by the Soviet Union as a showplace for avant-garde art, the Trienn=
ial=20
provoked passionate discussions in political as well as artistic circles =
through=20
the end of the 1980's. After the restoration of an independent Lithuania =
in=20
1990, the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius became the primary venue for=
=20
contemporary art in the Baltic region. The Baltic Triennial of Internatio=
nal Art=20
has likewise assumed a role of increasing significance and scope.=20

CENTRE OF ATTRACTION is composed of the exhibition, an after-opening deba=
te,=20
intermittent lectures, a seminar on the topic, guided tours and a catalog=
ue.=20
=20
CENTRE OF ATTRACTION is generously supported by: the Canada Council for t=
he=20
Arts, Creative New Zealand, Danish Contemporary Art Foundation, DFDS Tran=
sport,=20
DHL, FRAME - Finnish Fund for Art Exchange, Goethe Institute Vilnius, Hol=
iday=20
Inn, Institut f=FCr Auslandsbeziehungen, Pro Helvetia.
