of Wrocław”
The Great Wrocław Industria – call for papers for the 65th issue of “Quart”
Deadline for submission of papers: 6 June 2022
Printing of the issue: September 2022
Intensive and multifaceted production activities, impressive urban
expansion, constructional experiments, close connection with urban
development – the modern Wrocław is a Wrocław of industrial character,
defined by the brick massifs of factories, chimney risers, and pilaster
roofs of production halls. For almost 200 years, it was industry and its
material setting that shaped entire city districts: despite economic
crises and wartime destruction, the industrial tradition was continued
and enhanced, and the existing factories were modernized and enlarged,
creating around them social facilities, schools, factory art galleries, etc.
Does Wrocław’s (and Lower Silesia’s) industrial architecture have any
special features or a common reference point? What was this architecture
in the 19th and 20th century urban space, and what is it now – what
aesthetic and functional potential does it carry, how can it work in
post-industrial reality? In this issue of Quart, we will reflect on the
answers (generating further questions), focusing primarily on a few themes:
architecture and space of an industrial plant: internal relations and
links to the environment,
transformations and modernizations: expansions, introduction of new
construction and production solutions,
around the plant: image, cultural offer, presence in the city,
industrial sites yesterday and today: revitalization and adaptation, but
also demolition and documentation of buildings that no longer exist.
Deadline for submission of papers: 6 June 2022
The issue will be published in the 2nd half of September 2022.
Theme editor of the issue: Agata Gabiś, PhD
The texts may refer to the industrial architecture of Wrocław and Lower
Silesia within its current administrative borders. Papers (from 20,000
