Charlotte Moorman & the Avant-Garde
1960 - 1980

The Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois,
is presenting a series of exhibitions, readings, and performances from now
through July 2016.

All events are free and open to the public!

Charlotte Moorman (1933 - 1991) was a groundbreaking, rule-bending artist,
musician, poet, and advocate for the experimental art of her time.  She
championed the works of performers, poets, choreographers, composers,
writers, and visual-artists who were collapsing the boundaries between
media, and renegotiating the relationships between artist and audience.

>>  “DON'T THROW ANYTHING OUT!”  Culled from the Charlotte Moorman Archive
at the McCormick Library of Northwestern University, this exhibition
illuminates Moorman's working methods, and demonstrates her concern to
document the artistic milieu of her time.

>>  “ARCHIVES OF THE AVANT GARDE!”  Also from Special Collections at
McCormick Library, this exhibition presents highlights from four archives:
 the Papers of the composer/poet John Cage, the Papers of the poet and
FLUXUS artist Dick Higgins, the Papers of the poet and performance-artist
Jim McWilliams, and the Papers of the ONCE Festival.  All are on view at
the Block Museum.

>>  At 6:00 p.m. on Monday, 1 February 2016, in the GYM (the Art Theory &
Practice Building), there will be a conversation and performances with
Simone Forti.  Forti will discuss the relationship between dance and
language, quotidian movement and performance.  Forti's seminal 1961
“HUDDLE” will be included in the program.

>>  At 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 10 February 2016, in the Block Museum, SIMON
ANDERSON, an historian, will discuss the actions and perform some of the
works of FLUXUS artists and poets who participated in Moorman's Annual
Avant Garde Festivals.

>>  At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 17 February 2016, Tomeka Reid will perform
in the Block Museum.

>>  At 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 24 February 2016, in the Block Museum,
Timothy Ingold will formulate an alternative to occidental aesthetics by
drawing on the knowledge and experience of indigenous peoples of the
circumpolar North.

>>  At 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 2 March 2016, there will be a performance of
John Cage's 26'1.1499" for a String Player.  Charlotte Moorman's annotated
copy of the score will be followed in this performance.

>>  At 7:00 p.m. on Friday, 8 April 2016, a symposium, “PERFORMED IN THE
PRESENT TENSE” will be presented in the GYM (the Art Theory & Practice
Building).  FLUXUS artists and poets who have engaged with performance,
(re)performance, performance scores, and the curating of performance art,
will be featured.
