This course will focus on critically exploring the internet and software
for its social and political impact, while learning the technical tools
to intervene in purposeful ways. Instead of simply accepting and
consuming the technologies presented to us, we'll critically investigate
the intentions and effects of these technologies, and ways they can be
harnessed or exploited for meaningful social change.
You will walk away with
* A deeper understanding and awareness of the subliminal effects of
the internet, software, interfaces and interaction choices of the
tools we interact with everyday
* A technical understanding of how websites and webpages are rendered,
and how they can be manipulated through easily accessible
browser-based tools
* Hands-on experience with programming languages and tools for
building your own web-based work - HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery
* Practical knowledge for how to organize data, scrape websites, and
classify and retrieve documents from large corporations.
