*Eroded Sediments.*
*Works on paper and speculations on DNA inscriptions*

The exhibition combines a series of works made with graphite and paper with
an opening performance drawing on scientific experiments on long-lasting
DNA data encoding.

Paper and DNA are both instrumental, each on its own term, to the
traceability of human legacy on earth. By combining those two media, I
address two interrelated phenomena regarding human legacy: the erosive
process of time and the human attempt of opposing the transience of life by
gaining control over nature. They fascinate me because they imply, at the
same time, manipulation and erasure, preservation and decay, evolution and
erosion – all aspects that have influenced my work.

In the presented works, I examine the material properties of paper as well
as DNA as artistic media. I interrogate them as evidences of human
existence. Similarly to cave inscriptions, I like to think of these works
as something that may last for millennia.

In the series *Works on Paper
<http://www.margheritapevere.com/artwork/works-on-paper/>*, I focus on the
materiality of paper and the physical gesture of handwriting. Since I have
abandoned the picture frame, the body of these works is made of stratified
layers of archival paper, a kind of especially permanent and durable paper.
The surface of the works is eroded, and layers of handwriting overlap each
other, merging with the layers of paper. The handwriting is not meant to be
readable: just like I discarded the frame, I also discarded any literal
meaning of the words to reveal their pure evocative power.

The opening performance *Semina Aeternitatis
<http://www.margheritapevere.com/artwork/semina-aeternitatis/>* is the
first action of a project which aims at collecting memories of strangers
and storing them on my own DNA. The artist's body becomes a vector
connecting the past (people's memories) and the future (future readers). In
this performance, the audience and myself will speculate on DNA encoding
technology. During individual sessions, members of the audience will have
the opportunity to personally entrust me the memories which they don't want
to vanish.

The works and the performance presented here have one common focus: to
investigate the limits and potential of memory transmission as an aesthetic
means.
