Emma Campbell

„How to show?
Lab for research and art“
Datum:20.03 (19:00) - 30.03.2014

Belfast-born EMMA CAMPBELL is researching the impact of women's documentary photography in the UK as well as the various ideas, critiques, and modes
of practice behind it. She attempts to show how the history of feminist collectives can be revitalized by means of documentarism and photography.
Using her own practice on abortion as well as a woman’s photographic forum, she follows Women on Waves and Women on Web, sister organizations
providing women with early medical abortion pills and advice where it is illegal. For the series Emma plans on film screenings and public discussions
around these illegal, international interventions.

HOW TO SHOW? LAB FOR RESEARCH AND ART. – An exhibition series at the interface of practice based research, institutions, and the public.

In spring 2014: Artist researchers from Finland, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Poland, and Germany will provide insights into the current status of
their work. They will invite the public to participate in exhibitions, performances, lectures, and group discussions. The events will take place
during the course of four-week artist residencies. Forthcoming topics include investigations into traditional vestimentary practices and socialist
economies, cross-examinations of women’s collectives in photography and in illegal abortion practices, ethnographic research on postcolonial
computing in India, and philosophical investigations along Hannah Arendt’s ideas towards the concept of being political, among many more.

"Why is access to an illegal abortion in the EU member state Poland lighter than an actually legal abortion in South Africa?
Sarah Diehl's documentary "Abortion Democracy" compares the political, legislative and social developments regarding abortion in Poland and South
Africa:
The comparison of these countries is therefore suitable, because the laws of jurisdiction and public discourse in the 90s completely opposite in both
societies developments have taken: Poland criminalized in 1993 especially by the strong influence of the Catholic Church abortions completely.South
Africa liberalized in 1997, however, the termination of pregnancy by a review of the legal system in a discriminatory laws against minorities after
apartheid and now owns one of the most liberal abortion regulations worldwide.
