Rotterdam-based artist Melle Smets and sociologist Joost van Onna
followed the trail of discarded Western car parts and ended up in a
place called Suame Magazine in Ghana, where this scrap is processed
and marketed by some 200,000 highly specialized technicians in 12,000
informal workshops. Smets and Onna turned this trail to Suame
completely around and together with the local mechanics of Suame
Magazine produced the first car to ever be exported from this region
to the West. Once even the King of Ghana visited Suame Magazine to see
it with his own eyes, it was clear to the Ghanaian media: These
European ‘benefactors’ will bring Ghana a car industry. Can Smets and
Onna meet such high expectations? V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media
presents their answers in the exhibition Turtle 1: The Sequel. The
exhibition opens on Museum Night 8 March, and is open for the public
till 16 March.

DEAF Biennial 2014 – The Progress Trap
21 May – 9 June 2014
Various locations in Rotterdam, including V2_ and The New Institute
v2.nl/events/deaf-2014

DEAF Biennial 2014 is coming up in May with five intensive festival
days, and an exhibition that runs on till June 9th. For the 2014
edition DEAF is cooperating with Het Nieuwe Instituut for
architecture, design and e-culture as the festival's lead partner and
main location. Originally started by V2_ Institute for the Unstable
Media in the mid 1980s DEAF continues as an independent entity since
2012. V2_Institute is still involved as key partner. The theme of
DEAF2014 is The Progress Trap. DEAF Biennial 2014 proposes to view the
innovations of our globalized world through a critical lens and aims
to contrast the shallow gloss of our current techno-centric notion of
progress with the aspiration of truly advancing on a human scale. Our
current notion of progress as technological innovation has lured us
into “The Progress Trap”. However seductive quick gains from short
term technological solutions are, this addictive cycle of temporary
victories comes at the expense of more profound change. Progress has
become a means to an end in itself and has been decoupled from the
cultural and social advances that it was supposed to help achieve.
