Liveness, the properties of intimacy and immediacy experienced by both spectators and performers, as an essential value of many performance art forms. With the advent of digital media, new forms of performance and uses of technology bring into question the definition of liveness as a concept forged entirely from co-location and co-presence and force us to consider the effect of mediating technologies on our experience of 'being there'. During this one-day workshop, we aim to bring together an interdisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners to explore how HCI might better contribute to the understanding of, and design response to, shifting values of liveness brought about by advances in digitally mediated performance. By following an innovative video-led approach, we hope to inspire participants to reflect upon their shared experiences of liveness, at an event held the evening before the workshop.

We invite the submission of 2-4 page position papers tackling subjects relevant to the discussion of liveness in HCI and design including, but not limited to, the following topics:

* Reflections on liveness in digital arts practice
* Empirical studies of live performance
* Novel designs for liveness
* Design frameworks for liveness
* Exploring liveness beyond domains of performance

Submissions should be sent to jonathan.hook at ncl.ac.uk. Position papers will be reviewed by a committee of experts in the aforementioned topics. At least one author of each accepted submission must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the conference.

Please feel free to email us if you have any questions about the workshop. We look forward to receiving your submissions.
