How is cognition anchored in the body, how could high-level intelligence
evolve out of purely physical interactions with the environment? What
exactly does it mean that intersubjectivity is grounded in
intercorporality? What is the role of bodily self-consciousness in the
evolution of the human mind? Two public lectures will explore these
questions as part of the first of two meetings of the MIND Group in
Berlin.
The MIND Group – initiated and coordinated by Thomas Metzinger – is a
group of young philosophers and scientists with a strong interest in
questions concerning the mind, consciousness and cognition. One major
purpose of the group is to help bridge the gap between the sciences and
the humanities. The group’s meetings normally take place in the Villa
Giersch in Frankfurt am Main, but now, for the first time, they will
take
place in Berlin, in cooperation with the ICI Berlin and the
Wissenschaftskolleg. A second meeting will follow in May 2009.

Irit Rogoff: Circuits of Art and Globalisation
GeoCultures is an attempt to understand how a large range of current
cultural practices are producing new and unexpected realities within
circuits of globalisation. These departures are not simply the
production
of new subject matter or forms, but the production of new artistic
arenas
which enact contemporary political conjunctions.
Irit Rogoff is a theorist, curator and organizer who writes at the
intersections of the critical, the political and contemporary arts
practices. Rogoff is Professor of Visual Culture at Goldsmiths College
London University, a department she founded in 2002.
Ana Hoffner: Panic: Perverted
The performance "Panic: Perverted" is a reenactment of Valie Export’s
Aktionshose: Genitalpanik (1969). It articulates perspectives of
Expanded
Cinema and Body Performance for the present. By making use of a complex
media installation the performance explores possibilities of feminist
counter positioning in times of global migration.
Ana Hoffner is a performance artist and works in and on queer and
migrant
politics.

In the third ICI-Spannungsübung, Wendy Brown (UC Berkeley) and Rainer
Forst (University of Frankfurt/Main) will discuss different discourses
of
tolerance, their normative premises, limits, and political implications.
The main focus will be on social and political conflicts over the
recognition of differences in civil societies, national politics, and
transnational relations.
