// IDENTITY

*

Das EMAF steht in diesem Jahr unter dem Motto 
IDENTITY. Dabei wird sowohl die Frage nach der 
eigenen Identität in einer globalisierten Welt 
gestellt, als auch die generellen Veränderungen, 
die mit dem Vordringen der digitalen Technologien 
in alle Bereiche des privaten und öffentlichen 
Lebens verbunden sind, diskutiert.

// INTERNATIONALER TREFFPUNKT

*

Das Festival zeigt Film als zeitgenössisches 
Kunstwerk in Kinos, in Ausstellungen, performativ 
und multimedial. Als bedeutendes Forum für 
internationale Medienkunst werden Filme, Videos, 
Performances, multimediale Installationen und 
digitale Medien wie DVD und Internet präsentiert. 
Auf dem 21. EMAF 2008 werden Produktionen 
international renommierter Künstler ebenso 
vertreten sein wie innovative Arbeiten junger 
Talente aus Hochschulen und Kunstakademien. Für 
fünf Tage ist Osnabrück ein lebendiger und 
bedeutender Treffpunkt für Kuratoren, Verleiher, 
Galeristen und Fachleute aus Kunst, Kultur und 
Medien sowie für ein interessiertes 
internationales Publikum.

// PROGRAMMPLANUNG

*

An die 2200 Beiträge werden zur Zeit vom EMAF 
gesichtet. Sie kommen u.a. aus Deutschland, den 
USA, Brasilien, Südkorea, Neuseeland, aus 
Litauen, Rumänien und dem Iran - aus allen fünf 
Kontinenten. Insgesamt gibt es Einreichungen aus 
rund 50 Ländern. Derzeit läuft die 
Programmplanung und --auswahl zu allen Bereichen 
des Festivals:

Die Sichtungskommission besteht aus:

Voraussichtlich werden auf dem Festival etwa 350 
neue Installationen, Filme und Videos für das 
Festival präsentiert, die einen umfassenden 
Einblick in die Tendenzen der aktuellen 
Medienkunst bieten. Das Angebot des Festivals 
richtet sich sowohl an die Liebhaber des 
experimentellen Kinos als auch an die der 
Bildenden Kunst.

*// INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FORUM *

Das International Student Forum präsentiert in 
diesem Jahr wieder eine eigene Ausstellung sowie 
Film- und Videoprogramme mit studentischen 
Arbeiten. Für Studierende gibt es zum 
Hochschultag außerdem ein breit gefächertes 
Informationsangebot mit Filmproduktionen aus den 
Hochschulen und über Studiengänge aus dem In- und 
Ausland. Ausführlich werden sich in diesem Jahr 
die Muthesius Kunsthochschule aus Kiel, die Sint 
Lucas aus Gent und die Hochschule für Gestaltung 
in Offenbach vorstellen. Der Hochschultag dient 
auch als Kontakt- und Projektbörse für neue 
Vorhaben und Tendenzen aus den 
Medienuniversitäten, Kunstakademien und 
Designhochschulen.

// AUSSTELLUNG: YOUNG IDENTITIES -- GLOBAL YOUTH

*

Die Ausstellung widmet sich den "Young 
Identities" und zeigt Positionen zu und Blicke 
auf jugendliche Realitäten verschiedener 
Kontinente und Kulturen. Die internationalen 
Medienkünstler setzen sich mit Jugendkulturen und 
ihren Gemeinschaften auseinander, die teils in 
kleinen Strukturen, aber auch in globalen 
Netzwerken zu Hause sind. Ob Online-Communities 
oder ,echte' soziale Netze: kaum ist die hohe 
Zahl der jugendlichen Szenen zu überblicken. Sie 
sind bestimmt durch Musik, Mode, Rituale, Stars 
und Zeichen, die zugleich Selbstidentifizierung 
und Abgrenzung liefern. Die Suche nach 
Orientierung und die nach der Identität der 
Gemeinschaft steht in einer Umgebung zunehmender 
ökonomischer, familiärer und sozialer 
Unsicherheit oftmals im Vordergrund. Wie finden 
und besetzen Jugendliche Nischen in öffentlichen 
Räumen, unter dem Druck von Kommerz und Konsum 
oder in prekären Lebenssituationen? Wie spiegeln 
sich die Lebenssituationen Jugendlicher in der 
Medienkunst? Welche Hoffnungen und Visionen 
entwickeln sie? Die Ausstellung geht diesen 
Fragen nach.

// KONGRESS

*

Der Kongress nimmt das Thema IDENTITY auf und 
spiegelt es in den Referaten. Ricardo Mbarkho, 
Mitarbeiter der Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts 
in Beirut, spricht über die Medienkunstszene im 
Libanon, in der Künstler die Identitätskrise im 
Kontext der soziopolitischen und geographischen 
Umwelt reflektieren. Die Niederländerin Sophie 
Ernst, die an der Kunstakademie in 
Lahore/Pakistan lehrt, wird über die 
pakistanische Kunst- und Akademieszene sprechen. 
Digital Identity - Formen und Folgen der 
zunehmenden Erfassung privater Daten und deren 
kommerzielle Nutzung sind Themen von Ralf 
Bendrath. Ein anderes Thema beschäftigt Prof. 
Birgit Richard. Sie referiert über jugendliche 
Identitäten im web 2.0 und zeigt kreative 
Arbeiten von Jugendlichen, zum einen YouTube 
Favorites und zum anderen Inszenierungen von 
Game-Fans.

// RETROSPEKTIVE

*

Als Retrospektive wird der österreichische 
Avantgarde-Filmemacher Kurt Kren, der schon in 
den 1950er Jahren mit 8mm und 16mm 
experimentierte, von der Expertin Brigitte 
Burger-Utzer vorgestellt.

*// PREISE *

Auf dem Festival werden drei Preise vergeben: der 
"EMAF-Award" für eine richtungsweisende Arbeit 
der Medienkunst, der "Dialogpreis" des 
Auswärtigen Amtes zur Förderung des 
interkulturellen Austausches und der "Preis der 
deutschen Filmkritik" für den besten deutschen 
Experimentalfilm.

// EMAF ON TOUR

*

Die EMAF- Tourprogramme wurden 2007 in 
zahlreichen Städten in Europa wie Wien und Athen 
sowie in Mexiko und der Dominikanischen Republik 
gezeigt.

The motto of this year's European Media Art 
Festival is IDENTITY. Besides focusing on the 
issue of one's own identity in a globalised 
world, the general changes associated with the 
expansion of digital technologies into all areas 
of private and public life will also be under 
discussion.

// INTERNATIONAL MEETING PLACE

*

The festival shows film as a contemporary work of 
art in cinemas and exhibitions, both performed 
and multimedia. As an important forum for 
international Media Art, films, videos, 
performances, multimedia installations and 
digital media, such as DVD and internet, will be 
presented. The productions of internationally 
renowned artists will be represented at the 21st 
EMAF 2008 alongside innovative works of talented 
young people from higher education institutions 
and academies of art. For five whole days, 
Osnabrueck becomes a lively, prominent meeting 
place for curators, lenders, gallery owners and 
specialists from the field of art, culture and 
the media, as well as for an interested 
international audience.

// PROGRAMME PLANNING

*

Around 2200 contributions are currently being 
viewed by the EMAF team. These were sent from 
Germany, the USA, Brazil, South Korea, New 
Zealand, Lithuania, Romania and Iran -- in other 
words, from all five continents. Submissions were 
received from a total of around 50 countries. The 
programme is currently being planned and 
selections are being made for all areas of the 
festival:

installations, films and videos will be presented 
at the festival, giving viewers an extensive 
insight into the tendencies of current Media Art,

*// INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FORUM *

This year's International Student Forum presents 
its own exhibition again and film/video 
programmes containing students' works. The 
University Day also gives students the 
opportunity to obtain a wide range of 
information, with film productions from higher 
education institutions, and on degree programmes 
from home and abroad. The Muthesius 
Kunsthochschule in Kiel, the Sint Lucas in Ghent 
and the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach 
have the opportunity to present themselves in 
detail at this year's festival. The University 
Day also acts as a contact and exchange point for 
new projects and tendencies from media 
universities, academies of art and design 
colleges.

// EXHIBITION: YOUNG IDENTITIES -- GLOBAL YOUTH

*

The exhibition addresses "Young Identities", 
demonstrating attitudes towards and images of 
adolescent realities from a variety of continents 
and cultures. International media artists deal 
with youth cultures and their communities, which 
are sometimes at home in very small structures 
but also in global networks. Regardless of 
whether they are online communities or 'real' 
social networks: the large number of youth scenes 
is virtually impossible to take in. They are 
defined by music, fashion, rituals, stars, 
symbols and markings that simultaneously serve 
self-identification and demarcation purposes. The 
search for orientation and for the community's 
identity is often paramount in an environment of 
increasing economic, family-related and social 
insecurity. How do youths find and fill niches in 
public domains, under the pressure of commerce 
and consumption or in precarious living 
conditions? What hopes and visions do they 
develop? The exhibition pursues these issues with 
the artistic means of Media Art.

// CONGRESS

*

The Congress takes up the topic of IDENTITY and 
reflects it in its series of talks. Ricardo 
Mbarkho, employee at the Académie Libanaise des 
Beaux-Arts in Beirut, will talk about the Media 
Art scene in Lebanon, where artists reflect the 
identity crisis in the context of their 
socio-political and geographic environment. The 
Dutch Sophie Ernst, who lectures at the Academy 
of Art in Lahore/Pakistan, will give a talk on 
the Pakistani art and academy scene. Digital 
Identity - forms and consequences of the 
increasing collection of private data and their 
commercial use are the topics covered by Ralf 
Bendrath. Another topic is explored by Prof. 
Birgit Richard. She will lecture on youth 
identities in web 2.0 and will show creative 
works by adolescents - YouTube Favorites on the 
one hand, and stage-settings by game fans on the 
other.

*// RETROSPECTIVE*

This year's retrospective, introduced by the 
expert Brigitte Burger-Utzer, is of the Austrian 
avant-garde film-maker Kurt Kren, who 
experimented with 8mm und 16mm as early as in the 
1950s.

*// AWARDS *

Three awards will be presented at this year's 
festival: the "EMAF Award" for a trend-setting 
work in Media Art, the "Dialogpreis" of the 
German Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the 
promotion of intercultural exchange and the 
"Preis der deutschen Filmkritik" for the best 
German experimental film.

In 2007, the EMAF tour programme was shown in 
numerous cities in Europe, such as Vienna and 
Athens, as well as in Mexico and the Dominican 
Republic.
