Press Release for the Thailand New Media Arts Festival (MAF) 2006
To whom it may concern,
MAF works internationally and locally to showcase artworks that
demonstrate the evolution of new media technology and its creative
applications (new media art) in a local and international context.
Please find enclosed the press release for MAF06. The dates of the
festival are May 2-4 and events will occur across three venues in
Bangkok. A second MAF event will be held in November 2006 at BED
Supperclub.

The Institute of Cultural Exchange and Computer Arts Thailand (ICECA)
announces the 5th
annual NEW MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL 2006 (MAF06). This year's theme is LIVE AND
RETROSPECTIVE.
ICECA Thailand announces the 5th annual NEW MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL 2006
(MAF06) with the
newly acquired support of the US Embassy in Bangkok, a larger number
of artists than previous year,
on-going sponsorship from local and international agencies and a new
graphic identity courtesy of the
artists and designers of Bangkok2.
MAF06 will host 3 days of exhibitions, performances, screenings and
presentations across a number of
venues in Bangkok. The dates are May 2 - 4.
MAF06 Events at BED Supperclub, Chulalongkorn University and HOF Art Center
Opening highlights at BED Supperclub on May 2nd include the
controversial Thai video artist Puttisak
Seanvisate and a range of other artists from this country including
Tiyada Tiyawongsakul,
Ratchaneechai Wattanajung, Punyanuch Thammarak, Sangravee Prukpriwan
and Suwandee Lawilas.
Jeff Gompertz (US) will present a multi-camera artwork exploring
ideas of surveillance and the
architectural environment. Pierre Vildard (FR) combines performance,
customized VJ software and the
new Indian electronic musical instrument 'The Riyaz Master'.
Christopher Funkhouser (US) and Eric
Curkendall (Malaysia) have collaborated for a live music and digital
poetry performance, while VJ
Gordon Thomas of FlashForceOne will present live visuals from Germany
and the Fabrica supported
project "CommPose" by Ann Poochareon & Mark Argo (IT).
The opening night at BED will also offer teaser previews of a second
MAF06 event in November 2006.
The November showcase includes K.M Lo (HK), a director, writer and
producer who will present cuttingedge
high-value/low-cost film productions and Peter Christopherson (UK),
the writer, producer, director
and co-founder of avant-garde bands Coil, Psychic TV and Throbbing
Gristle. Works by artists from 23
countries will also be shown.
From 3pm on May 3rd and 4th, the 7 Floor of the Center for Academic
Resources at Chulalongkorn
University will host cultural exchange workshops and screenings. Over
20 international artists will
present their works and MAF06 is particularly delighted to welcome
the novelist, screenwriter, actor and
director Ronald Tavel, an early collaborator of Andy Warhol, in
discussion with the Thai film maker
Thunska Pansittivorakul. Ronald will screen and discuss his Warhol
productions and their contemporary
significance for filmmakers like Thunska. Pattana Chuenmana from
Silpakorn University will also show
Presentation and workshop with theme "The Local Machine Project" there.
MAF06 present a highlight workshop at Chulalongkorn University on May
4th, 2pm by the exceptional
team of artists and designers called Bangkok2. The workshop will
offer advice on the unique merging of
art, technology and commercial interest.
The Chulalongkorn University venue includes a selection of
retrospective video and interactive works by
Alfredo Cramerotti, Andrea Polli, Barry Anderson, Beate Spitzmüller,
Bruce Eves, Caedarelli Luigia,
Caterina Davinio, Dion Laurent, Hillary Mushkin, Jeong Han Kim, Karen
O'Rourke, Lubor Benda, Lydia
Ayers, Martin A. Dege, Michael Brynntrup, Michael Tan, Nadja Kutz,

Kokoras, Susanna Carlisle, Sylvia Winkler Stephan Koperl and "10
Narratives" a curated video

International Summit on Electronic Art and Creativity in Multimedia
HOF Art Center will host live performances on 4th May from Joni Anwar
and Monton Jira (TH) as
KATSUE, Max Peterson & Nannue Tippiter (DK) SIMPLEX, a performance by
P7, a live audio
performance by DJ Echo1 (Rene Chu, DK), video installation by Michael
Tan (SG). Thailand's VJ
Goodcitizen and The Real Surreal will appear courtesy of the event
promotion organization
Dude/Sweet.
The Embassy of the State of Israel has sponsored a performance by 16
members of an Israeli boyscouts
band at HOF Art Center. Fine Art professors from Silpakorn
University, Amrit Chusuwan,
Sakarin Khur-on and Kongsak Gulglangdon, will present their
collaborative video artwork titled Party-
Party.
HOF Art Center will also present an exhibition by young Thai artists
on 3 floors, the artists include Art
Jonglerdlum, Atitaya Srithongint, Kritapat Phadungkarn, Nipakorn
Taraphoom, Papichaya Kraivichien,
Rattaphol Chansopa, Thamon Srikhao.
Other artworks include site-specific and outdoor pieces such as the
video projection Falling Life by a
founding MAF director, media artist Prof. Michael Bielicky and Kamila
Richter from Germany.
