OBORO invites you to the launch of the Songs of Place,
which consists of a bookwork and two DVDs.  The DVDs
represent video and surround sound portraits of four
places: Halifax N.S., Montréal, QC, Vancouver, BC, and
Springwater, SK.  In production since 2000, this
series was re-mastered for pubication in OBORO's New
Media Lab, while Heimbecker was in residence in 2004. 
In the bookwork, five contributors were invited to
reflect on the "portraits": Vincent Bonin, Anna Friz,
Christof Migone, F. Scott Taylor, and Barry Truax. 
The artist himself contributes a text, which analyzes
his last ten years of research.

"The Songs of Place series is as difficult to
categorize as Heimbecker himself. These are works of
visual and auditory art that fully engage the senses
and sensibilities of the audience. Here Heimbecker
operates at the juncture of electro-acoustic
composition, soundscape and acoustic ecology, video
montage, and sonic sculpture. Over his lengthy career
as a sound artist specializing in quad- and octaphonic
surround systems, Heimbecker has developed unique
framing and editing techniques that enable these
intense portraits." A. Friz excerpt from the

Steve Heimbecker uses strategies that echo the road
maps of the places he has recorded. "Communities are
grown, albeit within a design structure. Maps of
places are like a tree, from the roots, to the trunk,
to the leaves. By using layered surround recording
techniques, I create intense spatial compositions full
of design, chance, and ambience." S. Heimbecker

Born in Saskatchewan, educated at the Alberta College
of Art and Design and now living in Montréal, Steve
Heimbecker is recognized for his contributions in
audio art, installation, and multi-channel sound
compositions. Since the mid-1980s he has exhibited and
performed across Canada and Europe.  In 2005 he won an
Honorary Mention in Interactive Art at Prix Ars
Electronica, Linz, Austria.

OBORO vous invite au lancement du coffret Songs of
Place qui comprend une publication et deux DVDs. Les
DVDs présentent quatre portraits vidéos et sonores
multiphoniques de lieux : Halifax (N.-É.), Montréal
(Qc), Vancouver (C.-B.) et Springwater (Sask.). En
production depuis 2000, cette série a été remastérisée
en 2004 à des fins de publication dans le Laboratoire
nouveaux médias d'OBORO, alors que Steve Heimbecker y
poursuivait des recherches comme artiste en résidence.
Dans la publication, cinq auteurs ont été par la suite
invités réfléchir sur ces «portraits» de lieux :
Vincent Bonin, Anna Friz, Christof Migone, F. Scott
Taylor, Barry Truax. L'artiste lui-même propose
également un texte d'analyse.

« La série Songs of Place est aussi difficile à
catégoriser que Heimbecker lui-même. Ce sont des
¦uvres en art visuel et auditif qui engagent
pleinement les sens et les sensibilités du public.
Heimbecker opère ici à la croisée de la composition
électroacoustique, du paysage sonore et de l'écologie
acoustique, du montage vidéo et de la sculpture
sonore. Pendant sa longue carrière comme artiste du
son se spécialisant en systèmes quadraphoniques et
octophoniques, Heimbecker a développé des techniques
de cadrage et de montage uniques qui lui permettent de
réaliser ces portraits intenses. » A. Friz, extrait du

Steve Heimbecker a recours dans la création de ces
portraits - qui se poursuivra d'ailleurs pour d'autres
villes - à des stratégies faisant écho aux cartes
routières des lieux qu'il a enregistrés. « Les
communautés sont des organismes qui poussent, même
dans le cadre d'une structure. Les cartes de lieux
sont comme un arbre : elles vont des racines aux
feuilles, en passant par le tronc.» S. Heimbecker

Né en Saskatchewan, formé au Alberta College of Art
and Design et vivant maintenant à Montréal, Steve
Heimbecker est connu pour son travail en art audio, en
installation et en composition sonore à canaux
multiples. Depuis le milieu des années 1980, il
présente son travail et ses performances au Canada et
en Europe. Il se méritait, en 2005, une mention
honoraire en art interactif aux Prix Arts Electronica,
à Linz en Autriche.
