SNAKE SPACE. NIO architecten
Dear Franck Ancel,
The Milan Triennale www.triennale.it hosts, as final event of its Festa per
l'Architettura, the exhibit SNAKE SPACE. NIO architecten, curated by Marco
Brizzi and produced by iMage, viewpoints on architecture www.image-web.org.
The exhibit, dedicated to the works of Maurice Nio www.nio.nl, will open on
Thursday June 30th, 2005 at 6.30 pm at the Milan Triennale and will be open
to the public until July 24th. It will then be presented in other capital
cities in Europe and around the world.
"The Milan Triennale -said Fulvio Irace, curator of the architecture and
landscape sector- has readily accepted the possibility to host this exhibit
because it proposes in a very original way the issue of urban
requalification. It does so by showing a specific attention towards aspects
that, though sometimes overlooked by the current practice, are central in
the contemporary metropolitan condition."
Maurice Nio, who also founded NOX architects, establishes a direct and
friendly dialogue between the peculiarity of his research and the manifold
possibilities offered by the contemporary urban scenario. An unexpected
journey emerges, desecrating at times, but always vivid and effective, on a
very sensitive and clever design activity.
"The spaces on which the works of NIO architecten stand -writes Marco Brizzi
in the exhibit's catalogue released by Mandragora www.mandragora.it- are
probably the first to be somewhat surprised. The snake that traverses them
and that usually enters them amidst total indifference traces an
indeterminate succession of environments that tend to elude the gaze of the
architect. These are faceless spaces, the ones where more institutional
forms of architecture do not have the words or means to express themselves.
They are, however, unconscious sites of fertility, which Maurice Nio
approaches stealthily, interpreting them with a genuinely analytic
imagination, saving them from anonymity, and giving them an expressive
dimension through unexpected thematizations. Unconscious protagonists of an
unusual practice, these spaces acquire self- awareness in the precise moment
in which they are narrated."
iMage produces the exhibition and is in charge of its communication.
