January 2005
.
a) Tsunami - a short comment
.
Tsunami represents a phenomenon which is well known in the Pacific region,
"this" Tsunami hit the people unexpected and with such an immense destructive power
because this phenomeon did not happen too frequently in the Past in the region before and nobody
saw any reason to install an early warning sytem as it exists well-functioning in the Pacific region.
The human tragedy is particularly distressing as besides a number of foreign tourists who wanted to
celebrate Christmas in the peaceful surroundings of a tropical paradise,
mainly the poorest of all people are affected, people who were partially already suffering from local civil wars or rebel conflicts (Sumatra and Sri Lanka), people who are not able to
survive now the material and immaterial loss without external aid.
.
On one hand, the waves of solidarity flooding to the affected regions give really an idea that we are one world, on the other hand one does not know whether to be glad or cry to hear that the economical damage on the South Asian region seems to be actually only marginal and the share holders can relief and go on as if nothing had happened.
.
The UN is estimating the damage of infrastructure such high that a reinstallation of the situation as it was before the disaster will take at least 7-10 years and this will be also the time the affected regions need external help.
And what about the victims who had not the priviledge to survive?
They can be probably found somewhere unidentified thrown into mass tombs,
and there is no time or chance for mourning.
.
Please show your solidarity by supporting materially and immaterially one of the numerous humanitarian local or international organisations which became active in the affected South Asian regions.
