[spectre] The new medium’s order

2004 “The new medium’s order is to shift”, video installation+book  four DVD projected ( video install: 10’ min. book: time var.

In this artwork ( video installation + book ), which displays itself on four walls, a window leads the visitor inside the computer 
rendering space. The spectator will be completely surrounded by water, or better the slow “work in progress” of the work in the 
room.  The four walls contain the video projections, and at the same time keep within the force of nature during its creation and 
representation. Therefore the spectator feels a primordial sensation always interrupted, waiting for some hint of progression and 
change. 
The artwork comes with a book ( an interactive book, in fact, the spectator can decide the frame speed, 15/25/30 per sec, to 
turn the pages ) that contains all the images  “frame by frame” of the whole animation. So, the book becomes "digital" and 
contains a "papery video installation". This operation transports and translates the artwork contents from DVD media-support to 
the book, assigning it a new meaning to the old media.  
"The new medium’s order is to shift" invert and subvert: subject and object, contents and container, form and concept, medium 
and message. Also it forces the parallel between the concept of mechanical and physical interactivity. So the spectator will see 
on the four walls the work in progress of the project, but only reading the book will see the finished work.

In quest’opera ( video installazione + libro ) che si sviluppa su quattro pareti, una finestra conduce il visitatore nello spazio di 
‘rendering’ all’interno di un computer. Lo spettatore si ritrova completamente circondato da acqua, o meglio dal lento ‘work in 
progress’ dell’opera in una stanza. Le quattro pareti contengono le proiezioni video e allo stesso tempo la forza della natura 
durante la sua  creazione e rappresentazione; perciò, il fruitore prova una sensazione primordiale sempre interotta, attendendo 
un acceno alla progressione ed al cambiamento.
L’opera è accompagnata da un libro ( interattivo perché il fruitore decide la velocità dei frames 15/25/30 per sec.a cui sfogliare 
le pagine ) che include tutte le immagini ‘frame by frame’ delle animazioni. Il libro così, diviene “digitale” e contiene una 
“videoinstallazione cartacea”. Questo lavoro, trasporta e traduce il contenuto dal supporto media DVD al libro, attribuendo un 
nuovo significato ad un vecchio media.
“The new medium’s order is to shift” inverte e sovverte: soggetto e oggetto, contenuto e contenitore, forma e concetto, mezzo e 
messaggio. Inoltre, mette a confronto il concetto di interattività “meccanica” e “fisica”, in quanto, nei quattro DVD proiettati 
sulle pareti sarà visibile il progetto in costruzione; mentre, solo nel libro si leggerà  l’opera finita.
