TONI CRABB 7 steps 6 legs: video & wait in drawing

============================

16.- 21. AUGUST 2005

ERÖFFNUNG: DIENSTAG, 16. AUGUST 2005, UM 19-22 UHR

We are pleased to present a recent work by Toni Crabb, a
Barcelona-based artist, who is primarily working in drawing, but who
also uses video as a means of exploring the temporal aspects of line.
Over the period of six months last year, she made a documentation of
butterflies in a tropical arboretum located in Empuriabrava, Spain.
Although the resulting video depicts the perfect moment of
transformation when a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis, the
sketchbook of drawings that she produced while waiting for the
butterflies to emerge, also represents a study in the metaphorical
implications of waiting and expectation. The soundtrack of the piece is
an interpretation by the performance group Discoteca Flaming Star of
Patti Smith’s “Fireflies"-- a song that Crabb describes as a kind of
“countdown, steps." For her, the drawings and the soundtrack represent
a wandering towards and away from the literal subject of the video; it
is intended to introduce a kind of seriality critically linked to the
event’s unfolding.

Both the video and drawings will be on view until Sunday, 21. August.

Toni Crabb is a Zimbabwean artist based in Barcelona. Crabb received
her degree in Fine Art in Madrid in 1995. Her work has been shown at
the Galería T4 in Barcelona, Innocence & Mystery in Berlin, Galería
EGAM in Madrid and the Gallery Delta in Harare.

This exhibition is the final installment of IN ABSENTIA, a film and
video series curated by Alena Williams.
