Excerpt from Interview with Roger Buergel by Robert Stasinski:

Robert Stasinski: How will you shape your discourse in relation to the
previous Documentas, is the historical dimension of importance to you? 

Roger Buergel: It will probably be, though maybe on an unconscious
level. There are certain moves that Okwui Enwezor made, like globalizing
the whole show through the idea of different platforms, of which I am
not completely convinced. I am also not convinced that the gesture of
embracing the entire planet is a right thing to do. But what is
interesting to see is that artists from various geopolitical areas in
the world are coming up with similar pieces, without knowing each other!

Robert Stasinski: What are your objections to Enwezors platform model? 

Roger Buergel: All the platforms were very exclusive as events, and it
was unclear how they would relate back to Kassel, which they obviously
did not. So I would be keener on a more fluid medium to transport
debates and aesthetic formalizations. At the moment we are thinking of
publishing Documenta Art Magazine, which would be a collaboration
between lots of art magazines, not the glossy ones, but those who are
doing substantial work around the world.
Robert Stasinski: As an editor of NU-E, representing the Scandinavian
and Nordic, I am very keen on hearing what you think of the art scene in
the north. 

Roger Buergel: I just came back from Moss, where I held a lecture at the
Momentum seminars there. The Norwegian art history from the previous
century interests me a lot. And I am very interested in the national art
agencies IASPIS, OCA, Frame, for example. Somehow they are modelled
after the Young British Artist idea, I guess. For me, as a concept, that
is not very interesting because the YBA's stayed pretty national, but
the Nordic artists, on the other hand, are urged to develop a political
and conceptual style that can be compatible with almost any biennial. So
I am wondering why they do not delve more into their local tradition,
without being localist.
