A resume
-
JavaMuseum
was founded in 2000 by Agricola de Cologne,
New Media curator and media artist from Cologne/Germany,
in order to find out what net based art could represent in a global context.
The features and exhibitions organized and published online by JavaMuseum
focussing on cultural areas on the globe made this evident.
This obviously successful idea brought suddenly a lot of artists into the
spotlight.
.
In 2001, 2002 and 2003, JavaMuseum organized an annual program
including a competition of net based art and a number of features of
different kind which were continued in 2004, to mention only some-->
netart from Latin American countries, Northern Europe, Asia and Pacific
area,
German speaking countries, Italy and many more.
JavaMuseum gave as a highlight 2001-2003 "the JavaArtist of the Year Award",
an honorary award for outstanding artistic working in the field of net based
art, among the awarded artists were
Mary-Anne Breeze, Jody Zellen, Tiia Johannson, Calin Man,
David Crawford, Annie Abrahams and Tsunamii.net.
.
During the years, Agricola de Cologne, director & curator of JavaMuseum
and founder of [NewMediaArtprojectNetwork]:||cologne
was a critical observer not only of the global "netart" scene,
but particularly the development of the Internet
as a free and independ platform for a specific art working.
.
Even if JavaMuseum and many other net based instances were intensively
engaging for net based art during the years,
net based art did not emancipate and did not become
widely accepted as a specific and serious form of New Media art in
contemporary art working,
but is still remaining in a kind of ghetto and going round continuously
in circles.
The countless definitions of "netart" and its use and misuse make this more
than evident.
.
The reasons why Agricola de Cologne decided to stop all activities as they
had been in the Past,
are various and cannot explained in a few words,
but he does not see this far-reaching decision as the
end of JavaMuseum, rather the end of a first phase to be followed
after some time of re-thinking by a next, the second phase based on a new
program or concept.
.
In this way,
JavaMuseum will keep all published projects, features, artworks
and artists archived
which will remain online for permanent and free access to this
historical recource of net based art between the years 2000 and 2004.
In the beginning of 2005, JavaMuseum will receive a completely new interface
and will be closer integrated in the museum environment of
Le Musee di-visioniste www.le-musee-divisioniste.org <http://www.le-musee-divisioniste.org>
.
In order to complete the 1st phase, JavaMuseum will organize a final show,
focussing on net based art working of 2003 and 2004.
All those artists who work net based and are not represented in JavaMuseum
yet, and all those who are already represented, but have new work
originating from 2003 and/or 2004, which is not already part of JavaMuseum
are cordially invited to submit up to three works/proposals to this final
show
which hopefully will become a last highlight of this 1st phase.
.
This final show will be launched in February 2005
in the framework of a series of physical presentations of
the global networking project
[R][R][F]2004--->XP www.newmediafest.org/rrf2004 <http://www.newmediafest.org/rrf2004>
in Palestine, Israel and Germany.
