Waag Society presents work-in-progress by Scholar in Residence Ananya
Vajpeyi.

During her two-month residency in Amsterdam, Dr. Vajpeyi, who is a
historian and writer based in India, has been examining visual images
and media practices surrounding the internment camps for Bosnian Muslims
that were discovered in the former Yugoslavia, in places like Omarska,
Trnopolje, Keraterm and Manjača, in 1992. This research provides a
cross-culturally comparative dimension to Vajpeyi's on-going work on the
state of exception in contemporary South Asia, where she looks at the
camp as a space and the refugee as a figure in relation to law,
citizenship and human rights. Her analysis of archival materials about
camps and refugees, especially photographs, coming out of the Balkan
conflict in Europe during the nineties will speak to similar data that
emerged from the genocidal violence against Muslims in Gujarat, India,
in 2002. As part of the public presentation on November 17, 2004, Janine
Huizenga and Bjorn Wijers of the Waag Society provide a design component
to Vajpeyi's theoretical intervention.

Ananya Vajpeyi is a Scholar of Peace 2004-05 with WISCOMP: Women in
Security, Conflict Management and Peace, New Delhi.
Janine Huizenga is the Creative Director of the Waag Society for old and
new media, Amsterdam.
Bjorn Wijers is an Interaction Developer with the Waag Society for old
and new media, Amsterdam.

Vajpeyi's residency at the Waag Society is supported by by EU-India
exchange program: "Towards a Culture of Open Networks".
