Zum 17. Mal findet vom 21. April bis 25. April in Osnabrueck eines der
groessten Multimediaereignisse Europas statt: an fuenf Tagen praesentiert
das EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL (EMAF) aktuelle Trends und neueste
Entwicklungen der internationalen Medienkunst.

Als internationales Forum für experimentelle Film- und Videoarbeiten,
Performances, multimediale Installationen, CD-ROM-, DVD- und
Internetprojekte zeigt das EMAF kreative Newcomer und renommierte
Kuenstler.

Mit der Ausstellung (bis 23. Mai) in der Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche
widmet sich das EMAF einem der spannendsten Aspekte der Medienkunst,
der Interaktivitaet. Unter dem Festival-Leitmotiv >Transmitter< stellt
das EMAF hier neuste multimediale Arbeiten vor, die sich modernster
Informations- und Uebertragungstechnologien bedienen:

// CINEMA
Aus ueber 1500 Einsendungen hat die Kommission 80 Filme und Videos
ausgewaehlt. In 20 Programmen werden Spiel- und Experimentalfilme,
Dokumentationen, Kunstvideos und Digitalclips gezeigt.
Mehrere Specials runden das Programm ab:
- Japanese Cinema - mit aktuellen Produktionen aus Fernost
- Legoland goes Hollywood - ein Programm zu den angesagten Brickfilms
- Neue deutsche Filme - mit Christoph Schlingensiefs Freakstars 3000,
Lutz Dammbecks "The Net", Dirk Boells "Die Perle in der Kacke" und Michael
Brynntrups "E.K.G.Expositus".


// RETROSPEKTIVE
Mit einer Hommage ehrt das EMAF den in Vergessenheit geratene
Filmemacher, Dichter und Schriftsteller Christopher Maclaine. In
Verbindung mit einer Lesung stellt Peter Kubelka seinen aller ersten
Film "Mosaik im Vertrauen" und seine neueste Produktion "Dichtung und
Wahrheit" (Deutschland-Premiere!) vor.

Auf dem Festival wird der Preis der Deutschen Filmkritik für die beste
deutsche Film- und Videoarbeit sowie zum ersten Mal der mit * 5.000
dotierte EMAF-Award für eine richtungsweisende Arbeit in der
Medienkunst verliehen.


// PERFORMANCE
"Out of Area", die Sound-Inszenierung von Werner Cee (D), verbindet
Klang-, Musik- und Stimmsplitter, mit den Texten des Zentrums fuer
innere Fuehrung der Bundeswehr zu einer dichten Geraeuschcollage.
Aufwendige Projektion - einfache Geschichte: In "Demi-Pas" erzaehlt
Julien Maire mit Hilfe eines selbstkonstruierten Projektors und
winzigsten Mechaniken den Alltag eines Mannes.
Schraeg - charmant - live: Daniel Massow nimmt aktuelle Castingshows
satirisch aufs Korn.

                EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL

For the 17th time, one of the greatest European multimedia events will
be taking place in Osnabrueck, from 21 to 25 April: over a period of
five days, the EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL (EMAF) will present current
trends and the latest developments in international media art.

As an international forum for experimental films and videos,
performances, multimedia installations, CD-ROM, DVD and Internet
projects, the EMAF will introduce both creative newcomers and renowned
artists.

In its exhibition (being shown until 23 May) at the Kunsthalle
Dominikanerkirche, the EMAF will focus on one of the most exciting
aspects of media art - that of interactivity. Under the festival's
leitmotif "Transmitter" the EMAF will project the latest multimedia
oeuvres that make use of state-of-the-art information and transmission
technologies:

// CINEMA
The board selected the 80 films and videos from a total of over 1,500
entries. Feature and experimental films, documentaries, art videos and
digital clips will be shown within 20 different programmes.
Several specials round off the programme:
- Japanese Cinema - with current productions from the Far East
- Legoland goes Hollywood - a programme on hip brick films
- New German films - including Christoph Schlingensief's "Freakstars
3000", Lutz Dammbeck's "The Net", Dirk Boell's "Die Perle in der Kacke" and
Michael Brynntrup's "E.K.G.Expositus".


// RETROSPECTIVE
In a homage, the EMAF honours the filmmaker, poet and writer
Christopher Maclaine, who has fallen into oblivion. Together with a
reading, Peter Kubelka will introduce his very first film "Mosaik im
Vertrauen" and his latest production "Dichtung und Wahrheit" (German
premiere!).

The German Film Critique Award for the best German film or video will
be presented at the festival, as well as the * 5,000 EMAF Award, which
will be given for the first time for pioneering work in media art.


// PERFORMANCE
"Out of Area", the sound realisation by Werner Cee (D), links sound,
music and vocal fragments with texts from the German federal army's
Centre for Internal Management to a dense collage of sounds.
Complicated projection - simple story: In "Demi-Pas", Julien Maire tells
about the every-day life of a man using a home-made projector and tiny
mechanisms.
Weird - charming - live: Daniel Massow hits out at the latest casting
shows.
