argos is a Brussels based centre for contemporary art that maintains 
the largest collection of audio-visual work made by artists, containing 
over 3,000 titles created by Belgian and international artists of 
different generations. The argos media library also contains about 
2,000 important cultural-historical and art-critical essay compilations 
on audio-visual art and visual culture, as well as 
monographs/catalogues on prominent artists. Also festival catalogues, 
magazines and comprehensive artist files are made available. By 2006 
argos wants to develop a highly functional database system, 
interchangeable with external institutions and linked to the 
development of online applications.

For the co-ordination and development of this database and disclosure 
system, argos is looking for a full-time collaborator. The position 
will involve the following activities:

- Enhancement and improvement of argos' current database system for its 
media collection;
- Developing an appropriate connection with, and online publication 
system of argos' media storage solutions;
- Enhanced descriptions, classification and contextualization of the 
content of argos' media collection, including the development of a 
thesaurus;
- On the longer term, making the system interoperable with similar 
libraries' and institutions' databases.

The candidate has the following profile:

- Higher education in information management or information 
architecture, or several years of experience in this domain;
- Knowledge of and experience with metadata and ontologies for the 
audiovisual arts;
- Experience with online interfaces to media catalogues and databases;
- Experience with the development of thesauri (if possible in the 
domain of the audiovisual arts);
- Proficient in English (written/spoken) and Dutch, or willing to learn 
Dutch on a short term.

Basic knowledge in the following related areas is desirable:

- Open Source applications and solutions for audiovisual databases;
- Open standards and interoperability protocols;
- Storage and online publication formats for audiovisual media, 
including streaming media;
- Copyright issues;
- Visual search engines.

We offer a full-time position starting from 1 February 2005. Salary 
according to experience.
