INTRODUCTION BY Lorenzo Miglioli

It's the talk of the town since signs and signals from digital are
increasing on and offline.
Many questions are ahead of works, practice, theory which play the
role of engine in what we
call NETART, i. e. art which derives from making networking.
Are we standing in front of the first generation of artists, writers,
poets, videomakers, cartoonists,
cross-media surfers who THINK, CREATE, WORK and SPREAD through the
interactive way?
Maybe people born and currently living in front of the monitor, less
alphabetized, more oriented
to frame reality in content shots, local images, reality frames as
phenomenon of what's real?
Are they called the 'INTERACTIVE ONES'?
Is what they call NETART(NETWORKING ART) ready to be recognized
offline? How will the two
worlds (on/off line) communicate?
Is networking art a product which derives from a new born general
behaviour ( as a melody is
more than the sum of the notes which makes it, so the net is more
complex than the elements
that operate in it)?
Is networking art searching for its own 'could be considered
readers'? In which way are they
getting shape?
Are netart readers powered readers?
Outside this empowerment, is netart readable or is it a form of art
literally inexistent and
unperceivable if not through a technological system capable of showing it?
Can a mass NETART exist?
1.000.000 questions more-

Interactivity is one of the main characteristic of what we would like
to define once for ever
DIGITAL ART vs NON DIGITAL ART. That is using the word DIGITAL (or
any other word whatsoever
to describe and name the phenomenon) as we would use the word
painting or sculpture,
literature, etc..
All this in a context which sees the evolution of DIGITAL MAKING in a
more evolved
NETWORKING MAKING, we're living the net age in which we can see
artist going beyond
technology, mastering in a narrative way the impact, taking it with
their own concepts and not
enduring the limits of programming.
Interactivity is a way of speaking not a language as an assembling of
codes. A world which will
have to communicate with other worlds. An evolved way to convey the
evolution making. This
urges us to try and read the evolution of digital in order to put
primitive and macro questions
beyond the concept of art itself. Biologists, chemists, physics,
philosophers, epistemologists,
media antropologists will have to read all this and ask themselves:
Which will be the role of art in human and non-human evolution?
Today the digital artist can ask himself, in his own visual and
inspired way, which is his personal
role in this revolutionary stream that NETART (virtually?) embodies
and represents. A visual
game. Maybe more than a game, but actually what's on earth more
complex than the game?
