Time-Space Relationships
As in all of the visual arts, interior and exterior spaces are frequently
the object of contemplation in structural film and video. Unlike in
narrative cinema, the width or density of a space is not used as the
backdrop for a plot. Instead, structural works seek to liberate themselves
from the predetermined space of the screen or monitor. They attempt to
create and structure natural three-dimensional perception with the
two-dimensional media of moving images such that the visual reproduction
portrays itself as an expansion of the real space.
Another significant factor of this genre is cinematic time, which behaves
differently than real time. Movements, series of events and actions in a
space can be artificially extended or represented in a radically short
period of time. The "felt" time is often completely different from the
course of "real" time.
