New technologies and applications, along with ever-more-sophisticated
compression techniques and broadband services, have accelerated the growth
of the web and the number of its users over the last two or three years -
and given rise to a great variety of innovations and experimentations. Here
is an intelligent book that matches the critical issues and discourses of
the new media with cutting-edge web design.

The book is organized into five essential areas of web design, with a
general introduction. Not forgetting that it took about a century for the
young art of book printing to realize that it needed page numbers to develop
easy navigation through the book, 'Interface' recognizes that roughly a
decade after the large-scale introduction of the web, designers and
developers are still exploring the best ways to navigate cyberspace;
'Typography' analyzes the reinvention of once static letterforms when
applied to on-screen media to accommodate time and motion; 'Animation' views
the web as a 'time-based' medium, in which 'print' and 'TV' environments are
combined into new formats; 'Community' investigates the explosive growth of
personal and community homepages - from the crude and candid to the innocent
and outrageously diverse - that have begun to exert their influence on
professional design; websites of considerable complexity and formal quality
are now being created by complete amateurs thanks to the dozens of editorial
and design software tools available, the consequences of which are
considered in 'Authoring', along with ways of using the web as 'text' to
sample and resample over and over again.

Today the web is a given, but its seemingly infinite variety and depth have
forced certain companies and designers - and their thinking - to profoundly
reconsider their position as editors of the web's content; on the web,
authoring and designing become deeply collaborative efforts. Deep Sites
leads a large audience directly to the key practitioners and to the
underlying principles that make their work so significant.
