center of South America and The Chapare is a rain
forest right at the core of Bolivia).

DURATION: 24 hours
DATE: June 15, 2003

DESCRIPTION: The performance consists of the 3
performers walking from dawn to dusk, for 24 hours;
bare-footed, fasting and muted, to leave the road with
traces of blood, yellow flowers and green leaves; each
performer will deliver the elements as following:

Martín YELLOW FLOWERS

Marialuisa BLOOD

Alexander GREEN LEAVES

The Bolivian flag is Red Yellow & Green


BACKGROUND:
At the Chapare, the coca leaf has been grown for
centuries, chewed by the descendants of the Incaic
Empire, used until today for the production of
coca-cola, besides other uses. Most of the coca leaves
grown at the Chapare are used today in the clandestine
elaboration of cocaine. The Bolivian government
eradicates the coca plantations in order to obtain a
US "Certification" to get funding for the so-called
"Alternative Development" programs. The "cocaleros"
(coca leaf farmers) are farmers fighting for their
right to free cultivation of the land. Against
governmental eradication their response is violence.
This conflict has been running for many years now. In
1998, the Chapare Highway (the only way connecting 3
main bolivian cities), was blocked for a month and a
half, causing a loss of millions to Bolivia. In such a
struggle of power many people have died. Blockades
and fighting still continue to this day.
