ANNOUNCEMENT
TOL Internet Discussion: The EU Referendums

The people of Slovenia, Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia, and--last
weekend--Poland
have all said yes to EU membership in the past few months. This weekend,
Czechs,
too, will go to the polls. Gunther Verheugen, the EU commissioner for
enlargement,
said as he toured the Czech Republic that if there were a Nobel prize for
skepticism,
the Czechs would win. Yet roughly three-quarters of Czechs say they will
turn out to
vote and about 80 percent say they will vote yes. The approval ratings may
be
overwhelming, but are attitudes as warm or just lukewarm?

TOL gives you the opportunity to get the inside story on accession from one
of
Brussels best: On Wednesday 11 June at 16:00 Central European time (10:00
a.m.
Eastern Daylight time), Karel Bartak, the long-time Czech Press Agency (CTK)
correspondent, will answer readers' questions on enlargement, the
referendums, what
lies in store for the new members, and any EU-related topic that you would
like to
explore.

Mr. Bartak has reported from Brussels since 1995 and was a finalist in the
2003 Eury
Prize for EU journalism. You can already submit questions now at:

An Overwhelming Yet Lukewarm Yes

RECENT TOL ARTICLES ON THE EU

Polands Catholics: I Believe, Therefore No?
The Pope has clearly said he himself would vote yes to EU membership. But

The real challenge for Polands leaders is not to convince farmers of the EUs

OUR TAKE ON EU ENLARGEMENT

Poland: Europes New Power
Polands new prominence has aroused fear and caused disorientation. The fear
is
misplaced and the disorientation useful.

Looking Forward: Toward a Better Union
It is excellent--as well as historic--that the European Union is laying out
the welcome

better
