The (Re)Structured Screen: Conversations on the New Moving Image

Symposium:
Monday, Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
at 540 West 21 Street
A public symposium/screening/vj happening. Panelists will speak about a
range of topics covering the digital impact on the moving image arts,
including: the spatialization of cinema in installation and immersive
works; how this has effected subjectivity and the experience of the
viewer; changes in narrative structure after cultural internalization of
looping and sampling ; how special effects have affected our
representation of fantasy & psychological states; and changes in "media
immediacy," portability and its effect on political structure. Suggested
donation at at the door: $10

Symposium panelists include:
     Dr. Steven Feiner, augmented reality specialist from Columbia
University
     Isaac Julien, director of Baadasssss Cinema
     Julia Loktev, artist and filmmaker
     Lev Manovich, author of The Language of New Media
     Rick Rowley, media activist from Big Noise Tactical Media
     Gary Winick, director of Tadpole.

The five week online forum (www.eyebeam.org/restructuredscreen) is an
interdisciplinary dialogue exploring the language, narrative structues,
unique environments, and politics of the new moving image.  Topics to be
explored include: immersive screen based environments in public spaces
and art works; concepts of looping, sampling and multi-formatting that
have affected narrative structure; expanded media access that has
widened film distribution and global activism; and new forms of
interactive interface composition, special effects compositing, and 3D
computer graphics that have forever modified the contemporary lexicon
and changed current aesthetics.
