what is stadtwerkstatt?

Stadtwerkstatt is a cultural association in Linz/Austria, founded in 1979
by art-school dissidents. It is a communication platform for the local art
scene and an experimental space for art and cultural development. Being a
vibrant place for an independent national and international avantgarde
underground art scene in the early years, over the years Stadtwerkstatt
became an independent art-media center. The focus is on critical
reflection
of the conditions of society and fostering free cultural initiatives,
mainly independent media-projects.

Stadtwerkstatt runs a cultural center downtown Linz. Hosting public access
media structures that were built up throughout the last years in
cooperation with other media activists like Radio FRO (non commercial
local
radio station, 24 hrs a day - also broadcasting in the net) - and
servus.at
(internet service for art and culture in the region), a Cafe with a small
club-stage, Cafe Strom and a hall for concerts and events. All of these
stages (real, virtual and ether) are networked.

Stadtwerkstatt realizes art-projects that are prototype samples of the
interdisciplinary work with main focus on public spaces, audience
participation and technology.
