Late tonight the news briefings and more and more video are just astonishing. These images are almost impossible to watch. No longer immune, the illogical siege stretched through the last 14 hours. A third of Manhattan will be closed for emergency services only. Some 300 firefighters missing. The trickle of people to emergency rooms belies the scale of those lost or missing. It is clearly thousands. No one can be cynical at this. The borders of the senseless have expanded. No more immunity from the violence. A hard lesson, but one that has haunted so much of the world for years. As student asked after hearing that I spent some time in Skopje, Croatia this sumnme, "when will your luck run out?" Unanswerable, but for some today was it....
