Projekt “trans- Berlin – Kyoto “ ist eine temporäre Video-, Licht- und
Soundinstallation, die in der Live-Perfromance in allen Medien modifiziert
und verändert wird. Bis September 2007 wird diese Arbeit weiter entwickelt
und bis November in Berlin (Ballhaus Naunyn) und Kyoto (Kyoto Art Center)
zur Aufführung kommen. Hier stellen die Künstler die Ergebnisse ihrer ersten
Arbeitsphase vor.
Inspiriert wird die ungewöhnliche künstlerische Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem
japanischen Licht- und Installationskünstler Kyota Takahashi und den
Künstlern Antonis Anissegos und Erika Matsunami durch ein Gedicht der in
Deutschland lebenden japanischen Dichterin Yoko Tawada. Tawada schreibt auf
deutsch und japanisch, ihre Texte bewegen sich stets zwischen zwei Polen.
Sie berührt immer wieder das Thema der Übersetzung, Überlagerung und
Verwandlung zweier Kulturen.
Wie transportiert man etwas von einer Sprache/Kultur in eine andere? Was
wandelt sich, was geht verloren, was entsteht neu? Diesem Prozess der
Verwandlung, der Bewegung zwischen den Kulturen, will die geplante
Performance mit ihrer offenen Form und der improvisatorischen Verbindung
unterschiedlicher Medien und Wahrnehmungsweisen nachspüren.

Live-AV-Performances von den Mitgliedern von Lab(au) und den Teilnehmern des
Workshops
„Liquid Space“ ist eine vom Brüsseler Medienkunstlabor LAb[au] während der
letzten drei Jahre entwickelte Veranstaltungsreihe zur Gestaltung
raumbezogener, immersiver und interaktiver audiovisueller Performances und
Installationen. Die Reihe ist international angelegt (bisherige Stationen:
Seul, Brüssel, Amsterdam, Rotterdam) und legt das besondere Augenmerk auf
kollaborative und interdisziplinäre Design-Prozesse und den kreativen
Austausch zwischen Musikern, Künstlern, Forschern und Entwicklern.
Im Rahmen des Club Transmediale 2007 ist für eine Auswahl internationaler
Künstler ein zehntägiger „Liquid Space“-Workshop (24.01- 03.02.07) mit
öffentlichen Lectures sowie audiovisuellen Performances geplant. Der
technische Aufbau des Projektes besteht im Kern aus einer 360-Grad
Multiscreen-Projektion und einer Surround-Sound-Anlage. Auf Basis der von
LAb[au] entwickelten Software "sPACE Navigable Music", die für 3D-Echtzeit-
Anwendungen im Hinblick auf räumlich distribuierte akustische und visuelle
Kompositionen entworfen wurde, werden während des Workshops neue Arbeiten
entwickelt, die dann dem Publikum vorgestellt werden.

“trans-Berlin – Kyoto”
The project “trans- Berlin – Kyoto” is a temporary video, light and sound
installation, an associative improvisation with live mixing and live music.
The work will be developed until September 2007 and until November the
result will be showed in Berlin (Ballhaus Naunynstraße) and Kyoto (Kyoto Art
Center).
The unusual artistic collaboration between the Japanese light and
installation artist Kyota Takahashi and the two Berlin-based artists,
Antonis Anissegos (composer and pianist) and Erika Matsunami (video artist),
is inspired by a poem from the Japanese poet Yoko Tawada, who lives in
Again and again, she touches upon the subject of the translation,
superimposition and transformation of two cultures. How, for example, does
one transport something from one language or culture into another? What
changes, what is lost, what evolves?
With its open form and improvised connection of various media and cognitive
modes, the scheduled performance seeks to trace this process of
transformation and intercultural motion. The focus is on both cultures,
Japan/Asia and Germany/Europe, and their manifold facets and unconscious
layers of cultural and personal identity. The artistic work examines the
distance between the individual and society, space and time, body and
emotion, or dream and recollection: Texts, nuances, linguistic rhythms and
associative fields transform from one language to another, from one culture
to another, and from one medium to another.
Within the scope of the live-mix performance on stage, various media
elements connect and transform, making the process of transformation
visible, audible, and tangible.

"Liquid Space" is a series of collaborative design sessions, developed over
the last three years by the Belgian media arts laboratory, LAb[au], to
create immersive and interactive spatial audio-visuals. The event is
international in character, with stopovers to date in Seoul, Brussels,
Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and offers a platform for interdisciplinary design
processes and creative exchange between musicians, artists, designers,
researchers and inventors.
The topic of the collaborative design sessions is designing spatial
audiovisuals, or in short: how to produce an artwork where music and visuals
merge through to the concept of "space". Thus movie making techniques, music
composition and architectural structural practices come together.
"Liquid Space 05" at CTM.07 will take place in the Ballhaus Naunynstrasse in
Berlin-Kreuzberg within an experiment-station made of a 360°-multiscreen-
panorama-projection and a surround-audio-system. It comprises a 12-day
workshop for selected participants as well as public events such as
presentations and performances by members of LAb[au] and participating
artists, and an exchange session, to which anyone interested can bring along
his/her own instruments and join in to experiment within the workshop
environment.
The basis for new works to be developed during the design session will be
the software environment "sPACE Navigable Music" developed by Lab[au]. This
software synchronizes the rendering performance of a number of computers to
create audio-visual electronic 3d-spaces, through which one can navigate in
real time. In this sense, "Liquid Space" proposes rather a space- than time-
based logic of visual and sonic media.
