DIALOGUES OF WINTER,
DISCOURSES OF SPRING
A Series of Art Talks and Collaborations Inviting
Artists, Artist-run-spaces, Curators and Cultural Producers
DOWDOS presents:
Tuesday 18. April at 8pm at Sparwasser HQ, Torstrasse 161, Berlin-Mitte
Host: Joel Mu, independent curator
Guests: Henrikke Nielsen + Suzanne van de Ven
(This evening's talk will be held in English)
When curating under the term: "independent", degrees of
experimentation are generally presumed, whether rightly or not. This
lingering association, which in reality may have less to do with
curators and more to do with certain curatorial contexts, is
nonetheless a possible feature of curatorial practice. These contexts,
be they conventional or non-conformist, predicated by some situational
context or produced 'neutrally' in either temporary or ongoing
projects, forces one, when linking 'independent' with 'experimental',
to critically link a relation between different exhibiting spaces and
curating, in much the same the way.
In response to these and other issues, Berlin-based independent
curator Henrikke Neilson and Amsterdam-based independent curator
Suzanne van de Ven will, from the contexts of their of work, discuss
recent, current and fore-coming projects vis-à-vis the curatorial and
artist profession in general.
Henrikke Neilsen is an independent curator with current projects in
Berlin and Copenhagen. She is also an art critic for Art Asia Pacific
and Flash Art International as well as having teaching commitments at
the Danish Art Academy, Jutland. In 2004, the exhibition, "The build,
the unbuilt and the unbuildable" was exhibited at the Institute of
Contempoary Art, Copenhagen, followed by the 2005 co-founding of the
independent project space CROY NIELSEN in Berlin. In November 2005
Nielsen curated the exhibition Suspend Disbelief in Sparwasser HQ. For
2006, Henrikke Nielsen has been invited to guest curate "Was ware wenn
#5" at JET in Berlin.
Suzanne van de Ven is an independent curator (e.g. The 24th
Contemporary Artists Exhibition, Aksanat Istanbul, PORTAL I-II,
Kunsthalle Fridericianum Kassel and Cargo Series, Loods 6 Amsterdam)
and writer (Metropolis M, Paletten, Art-Ist) based in Amsterdam. She
currently holds a guest-professorship for Exhibition Practice and
Analysis at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe,
implemented by the curating class of the University of Amsterdam in
cooperation with the Sandberg Institute in 2002 and conducted it since,
and is a member of the advisory board of SKOR, the Dutch foundation for
art and public space. Van de Ven is presently working on an exhibition
project in Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam that will translocate to
subsequent places, among which Diyarbakir (Turkey), and on a
collaborative project in Tallinn ( Estonian Art Museum).
TONIGHT'S TALK HAS BEEN KINDLY SUPPORTED BY THE ROYAL NETHERLAND'S

DOWDOWS Concept and Hosted by: Michael Bears, Henriette Bretton-Meyer,

Continuing Sparwasser HQ's already 5 year commitment to self economy
and auto curating, DIALOGUES OF WINTER, DISCOURSES OF SPRING (DOWDOS)
re-visits Sparwasser HQ's program of "artists inviting artists" in a
series of evening talks open to nomadic artists, curators, cultural
producers and artist-run-spaces currently residing or moving through
Berlin. These talks hosted by Michael Baers, Henriette Bretton-Meyer,
Saim Demircan, Catherine Griffiths, Joel Mu and Lise Nellemann have
been organized to turn Sparwasser HQ into an Open Studio, which works
towards building future collaborations and partnerships in Berlin and
elsewhere.
Opening on Tuesday 28 February at 8pm and then every other Tuesday
until the 06 June, DOWDOS will provide the initial architecture for
invited participants to make new, or establish further contacts in
Berlin, by communicating and distributing their own subject-brand of
artistic ideas. Sharing and testing these ideas (and practices) within
6 different hosted settings, DOWDOS will re-examine the model of
Artists Talks' by exploring different modes of presentation and
discussion. Each evening will have its own particular agenda, structure
and intended outcome, including moderated discussion, presentations of
artist-run-spaces and exchanges between curators, open studio and
collaborative projects with partner exhibiting spaces.
