An exhibition and a series of discussions curated by Andrei Siclodi
and Ingeborg Erhart
in cooperation with the Jan van Eyck Academie*
Innsbruck, 10.11.2005 - 03.02.2006
Kunstlerhaus Buchsenhausen, Stadtturmgalerie, Kunstpavillon*
<Private Investigations> is a research project on contemporary art
practices that make use of various individual (non-scientific) research
methods and strategies in order to acquire information and to process it
to knowledge bases, which may then be used as the material of the
artistic work itself. Since these strategies and methods are fairly
common in the artistic research and production in the institutional
context of residency and postgraduate programmes, the project also
intends to analyse these specific working conditions. The project is
structured as a series of residencies, exhibitions and symposia,
screenings and presentations, held at different locations in Central and
South-Eastern Europe over the next two years.
As a point of departure, the exhibition and discussion series in
Innsbruck, between November 10, 2005 and February 3, 2006, at the
Kunstlerhaus Buchsenhausen, the Stadtturmgalerie and the Kunstpavillon,
presents and discusses works by former fellows of the international
residency programme for visual and media arts <büchsenhausen.air> from
the past three years. The artists and theorists invited deal in various
ways with particular strategies and forms of artistic research into
topics such as the spreading of cultural patterns (Memetics),
collaborative artistic production and generative software, serial
architecture and its influence on the human behaviour, the idiomatic
behaviour of an artists’ community in a context of transition, the
social and psychological changes within society by examining notions of
female identity, models of language and image perception through
cinematographic and computerised knowledge acquisition and organisation,
and fieldwork as an artistic practice. In addition, the project focuses
on and examines more closely the research and production conditions in
the post-academic context of the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. In
this framework researchers and advising researchers from the three
Departments (Fine Art, Design and Theory) will present and discuss their
ongoing projects.

<Creating Creative Software: A Research into interaction patterns in
computer music programming languages>
<Extracts from the Pidgin Project>*
ixi software is an experimental project by Enrike Hurtado (Bilbao) and
Thor Magnusson (London) concerned with the research of how current open
source computer music programming languages enable musicians to bypass
the constraints that commercial music software puts on their work. Their
collaborative research work is related to the topics of open source
concepts in art as well as the field of generative software.

<Social Engine>
The project <Social Engine> explores how cultural patterns spread. It is
produced as an online database of memes, units of cultural behaviourally
transmissible information which are passed on to other people by
imitation (Richard Dawkins). Since memes are not coded as universal
codes, they are subjected to constant variations, i.e. modalities of
expression of different users. Meme vehicles are textual and visual
entities that possess a strong emotional charge and a high
inter-subjective value. One might say that <Social Engine> is a stage on
which a ‚battle‘ under the flag of a certain idea is going on.
Since 1999 Urtica Art and Media Research Group (Eduard Balaz and Violeta
Vojvodic), Novi Sad/ Belgrade, has been developing multidisciplinary
projects that merge art, science and social engagement. Their work
ranges from web-based projects to media actions and short video
broadcasts to the general public on television.

Natascha Hagenbeek
<Freedom in Today’s Culture>
‘I investigate the concepts of authenticity and freedom in identity. In
my work, a long period of research which usually grows into a
performance, I investigate these concepts by using identification and
trying to avoid appropriation. “Pointing at things” as well as “being
those things”. I believe in the necessity of experiment and the power of
experience, in order to reflect on oneself and try to stay “free” or
“authentic” in today’s culture.’ (Natascha Hagenbeek)
Natascha Hagenbeek currently is a researcher at the fine art department
of the Jan van Eyck Academie.
