   01) Cover & Interview: Saiman Chow

The designer for this issue's cover is Saiman Chow, born in Hong
Kong and grown up in US. He is broadening his active field greatly
as proved that he has just finished a Nike project, "Art of Speed".
In his art work, there seems rich multi-cultural essence brought
by his unique background. Let's probe into his roots.

   --------------------------------------------------------

   02) 7th Media Arts Festival Exhibition Report

The exhibition for award winning works of the 7th Media Arts
festival was held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of
Photography from February 27th to March 7th. This event is
organised by the Culture Agency to encourage artists and provide
an opportunity for them to show their works to a wider public
with an aim to develop Japanese media arts.

   --------------------------------------------------------

   03) The Armory Show 2004 Report

The lingering smell of beef quesadilla and chili from our rushed
lunch filled the freight elevator as we waited to get into the
Armory Show on a blustery March day in New York City. While
standing in line to purchase our tickets, two women slipped us
their museum passes, and we waltzed in to enjoy the show
gratis. Slowly making our way through the crowd clustered near
the coat check, our eyes were greeted by Tony Matelli's
gruesomely lifelike sculpture of a chimpanzee caught in the
charming moment after vomiting. Perhaps this was an omen of
   what awaited us?

   --------------------------------------------------------

   04) Chisato Shinya Exhibition Report

Chisato Shinya, a Sapporo based illustrator who did the Shift
cover design for the March issue, held an exhibition called
"Imagine Story" at Soso in March. In this exhibition, she created
a kind of picture book with only illustrations , removing words
from the story which she has so far kept in her mind. It enables
you to be the storyteller, crafting your own story. In the opening
event, inviting visual creator Kimiyoshi Futori and sound creator
Kentaro Hamasato as guests, they presented a fantastic night.

   --------------------------------------------------------

   05) Tujiko Noriko In Japan

Do you know a female artist, named Tujiko Noriko? She debuted
on an Austrian experimental label, Mego in 2001. Now she lives

   15) Editor's notes

It's April. Japanese strongest image of April would be cherry
blossom. Pinkish soft beautiful flowers. It is Japanese
favourites from a long time ago. There is a traditional custom
that we go on a picnic to see flowers and have a party under the
trees but I have never done such picnic so I'm thinking to do it
for this year. Next this column would be about the experience! (N)
